The Peninsula of Baja California is an isolated territory, distinguished for the presence of exportation fisheries and the social organization amongst their fishermen. The environmental histories of two fishing management schemes (abalone/lobster and sea urchin) on the Pacific coast are described. The origin of both systems is similar, an intensive fishing management scheme with high commercial value in Asia, and the change in profession, from ranchers and farmers to fishermen. In a second stage, the fishermen organized in cooperatives, giving way to a co-management scheme of abalone, lobster in the southern part and red sea urchin. As a response to natural environment changes, social organizations, institution and commercial trends, and most recently climate change, the fishermen have developed adaptive co-management scheme. This has promoted national successful experiences that could inspire sustainable management schemes in other fisheries.References
